CADETS HOST THIRD VIRTUAL CAMP, HISTORY NIGHT
The Cadets held their third virtual camp of the spring the weekend of May 29-31. Along with continuing to learn the 2021 show music and refining marching and equipment technique, members and staff participated in a discussion with alumni and a virtual History Night.
The Cadets held its first virtual camp back in March after the in-person brass camp had to be canceled. Cadets Brass Caption Manager, Dr. Matt Stratton, guided his staff and performers through the initial learning curve as they employed this virtual rehearsal process for the first time. The Cadets were one of only a few drum corps at the time to hold a March camp and continue to be one of the few engaging with its membership in a full corps virtual environment. In-person rehearsal events still cannot be held, and The Cadets strive to keep performers safe and healthy.
In addition to rehearsing in sectionals throughout the weekend, The Cadets heard from DCI Executive Director, Dan Acheson, and the Chair of the DCI Board of Directors, Kathy Black. Cadets Brass were treated to a discussion with Cadets Brass alumni Rick Wygant, Jana Bocook, Joshua Gall, and John Patty. Cadets Brass Arranger, Jay Bocook, joined in this important discussion.
The camp ended on Sunday with a live broadcast of the traditional Cadets History Night, typically held during spring training. Scotty Mcgarry, Cadets historian, and alumnus has been leading this presentation to the members for 26 years. A longtime volunteer and former Cadets board member, Scotty marched in The Cadets from 1957 through 1966.
With 86 years of history, The Cadets are the most storied drum corps in all of DCI. Scotty shared photos, stories, and a video which you can view by clicking this link to The Cadets YouTube channel https://youtu.be/BXJUszzNgus.
Also, during this camp, two lucky donors sat in on the Sunday afternoon brass and percussion ensemble rehearsal and heard some of the Cadets 2021 show music. Thank you to Brian Fay and David Brown, both Cadets alumni, for your support. Brian and David were selected Saturday evening, May 30, from all the donors who gave to The Cadets on Maroon and Gold Day and throughout the Ten For 34 Campaign Drive.
