Gary is a Licensed Architect registered in Pennsylvania and New York and directs his firm, Gary Matczak Architects, in Erie, Pa. He began his professional career in 1979 as a drafter and attained professional licensure after serving a 15-year apprenticeship. Gary is a longtime member of the American Institute of Architects and served as Pennsylvania State President in 2013.

Gary is also a professional musician and has been a member of the Musicians Union, Local 17 for over 40 years. He currently serves as the Business Manager for the Erie Thunderbirds, and Board Secretary for the Erie Drum Corps Association. Gary is a member and founder of the Pennsylvania Drum Corps Hall of Fame.

Gary has two daughters, Sara and Amy. Sara is married and living in Florida as a Fund Manager and Prediction Modeler for a private equity investment management group in the West Palm Beach area. Amy recently passed her board exams and is finishing her Masters Degree in Veterinary Science at Glasgow University in Scotland, UK.
